The Frame of a House: Markus Roßmann’s explanation of Rolfing

A friend once asked me, “What is Rolfing anyway?”

“That’s actually really simple,” I said.  “But to answer your question, I have to ask you a question.  How important to you are your health, your sense of happiness, your sense of presence, and your sense of self-confidence?”

“Those are all important,” replied my friend.  “Why?

“Well, how about your ability to concentrate and your sense of direction in life?”

“Yeah, those are important to me.  So what?” » Continue reading “The Frame of a House: Markus Roßmann’s explanation of Rolfing”

Was ist Rolfing?

Are Structural Integration and Rolfing the same thing?

Rolfing is a brand of structural integration. Ida Rolf, the person from whom the term “Rolfing” is derived, used a few different names for the therapy now known as structural integration over the course of its development. The name that she finally settled on was structural integration, but people liked calling it “rolfing” or describing the experience as “getting rolfed over.”  So you had a proper name (structural integration) and a colloquialism (rolfing).

Today, the use of the word “rolfing” and its derivatives is a bit more touchy because of intellectual property rights. » Continue reading “Are Structural Integration and Rolfing the same thing?”

A visual overview of the 10-series

For the visually inclined, I’ve created a graphic showing you the parts of the body that you can generally expect will be worked on in any given session. Some practitioners may deviate depending on your individual needs, of course. It is also available as a PDF here.

How can trauma be stored in the body’s tissues (Part 1)?

On Rolfing sites and in books on structural integration, you’ll find countless claims about “trauma being stored in our tissues.” For some, this can be a hard pill to swallow – it was for me – but neurobiological investigations bear out this metaphorical claim. New tools to investigate the mechanisms involved in the experience of pain are yielding some surprising (or perhaps not so surprising) insights. » Continue reading “How can trauma be stored in the body’s tissues (Part 1)?”

What does Rolfing have to do with emotions?

Getting Rolfed often arouses emotional responses in clients that can be mild and practically unnoticeable as well as strong and cathartic. Changes in the body, through various neurobiological mechanisms, affect the functioning of the brain, with particular effect on the regions associated with emotions and feelings. The result is that clients often report feeling happier, uplifted, and more stable. » Continue reading “What does Rolfing have to do with emotions?”

Rolfing Results: Elisha

These are photos of Elisha.* They have been altered to show only the outlines to protect her identity and more clearly show the contour differences that occurred as a result of the Rolfing 10-series and three Movement Integration sessions.

Important changes include: the resting position of the knees (locked before, relaxed after), horizontalized pelvis with improved activation of transversus abdominis, reduced thoracic curve, and easier position of head and neck.

What is the Rolfing® Ten Series?

The hallmark of Rolfing Structural Integration is a standardized “recipe” known as the Ten Series, the goal of which is to systematically balance and optimize both the structure (shape) and function (movement) of the entire body over the course of ten Rolfing sessions. Each session focuses on freeing restrictions or holdings trapped in a particular region of the body. A practitioner also maintains a holistic view of the client’s entire system during each session, thus ensuring the transformational process evolves in a comfortable and harmonious way.
